This photograph of Mike taken in Vietnam in 1969 was selected to be the presenting image for an exhibition by the Virginia War Memorial to honor Virginia‘s Vietnam war veterans.
The exhibition opened January 28, 2023 and will run until the end of the year. From there it will travel around the state.
This extraordinary photograph was taken by Jeffrey Hinman, an army photographer / correspondent. After unsuccessful attempts and more than forty years after the photo was taken, Jeff was able to locate Mike and share this image. The photo shows Mike, back from the last of his combat field missions wearing the helmet cover he painted while waiting to be shipped out of Vietnam for the last time.

Mike was awarded three Bronze Stars with V (Valor) devices in addition to three Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Medal, and the usual assortment of medals for service in Vietnam.
