The Rock People
Scenes from the Fall Line

Photographs from several locations along the fall line of the James River in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. The project began in 2008 and is ongoing.

There are many reasons I go to the falls of the James. As a photographer, I'm primarily an observer of nature. For 'The Rock People’ project, I turn my camera to the observers; the others, who, like me, find refreshment and renewal on the river.

We rock people are a diverse group, but we are connected in spirit by our love of the falls. It’s a place that is also a state of mind. We become the children of nature. We play, we climb the boulders, hop the rocks, swim in the pools and ride the currents. Often we can be seen alone or in pairs doing nothing. We share the understanding that this is a place where the activity of doing nothing is important and comes easy.

It is a place where negative ions abound - released into the air as water tumbles through fields of rocks calming the spirit and energizing the body with wellbeing.

These are a few of Richmond's rock people.
